Ecke and wingman Ogefr Hans Günther Heep were flying from Kirkenes to Banak in Norway on 15 November, 1944, when a combination of bad weather, engine trouble and a malfunction of the radio equipment prevented them from continuing their flight as they were about out of fuel.
